Etta James Slams Beyonce: “Gonna Get Her A** Whooped” (AUDIO)

Etta is a fine vocalist and her version is definitive, but it is not her song.

If she had written it, I would have some sympathy. But the song was written (by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren) 20 years before Etta recorded it. It had already been a hit for Glenn Miller and Nat King Cole. Not exactly lightweights, It was a standard.

Credit where due. Gordon and Warren wrote a great song. I don’t think Nat King Cole tore a strip off Etta for recording “his” song. And if he did he was a douchebag.

Ironically just before reading this article I had been listening to three different versions of the song “Wild is the Wind” written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington. David Bowie, Nina Simone and Johnny Mathis each do wonderful things with it. I sing it in the shower. But it is none of our property.
